Synopsis

Keywords: Neuro: Nervous System, Neuro: Brain Connectivity, Neuro: Neurodegeneration

Alzheimer’s is a devastating condition afflicting the majority of aging individuals. The need for imaging is to identify early signs of the disease as well as novel markers that detect different aspects of micropathology under active investigation. This talk will review the major and currently investigated aspects of AD pathology along with accompanying advanced imaging modalities that can potentially aid in investigations of disease mechanism and therapeutics as well as clinical translation.

Abstract

AD is a heterogeneous disorder primarily characterized by the presence of beta amyloid oligomers and plaques as well as phospho-tau rich neurofibrillary pathology. There are distinct progressions and brain regions involved in these two proteinopathies. The time courses of amyloid and tau deposition with regard to the brain’s spatial topography will be reviewed in the context of PET-MR. Ultimately, neurodegeneration is a consequence of the protein pathology, and this lecture will discuss conventional and advanced methods of visualizing neurodegeneration. Several novel aspects of AD pathology, including inflammation, iron, myelin, and vascular pathology, will be reviewed in concert with the associated advanced imaging modalities.
