Synopsis

Keywords: Contrast mechanisms: Electromagnetic Tissue Properties, Physics & Engineering: Multimodal, Neuro: Brain

With the rise of magnetic T and increase in RF frequency in MRI, there is need for understanding of electromagnetic field distribution within biological objects. It requires the knowledge of magnetic and dielectric properties.

The first portion of the talk is on dielectric properties of tissues, with an emphasis on brain tissues. Dielectric properties of tissues are sensitive to hypoxia, blood content, ischemia, stroke and malignancies. It opens up an opportunity for novel functional imaging modality - microwave tomography. The second part of the talk is on particulars of the technology, complementarity with MRI, results achieved and new horizons in applications.
