Dr Pettigrew's perspectives on modern Research Culture will be derived from his two decades of front-line institutional leadership. He will discuss his experiences of high-level change in creating the US’s first educational programme fully integrating engineering and medicine. The initial program ENMED, in the new School of Engineering Medicine, trains physcians who are medical innovators and graduate in 4 years with simultaneously earned MD and Engineering Masters degrees, and are required to have an invention. As past and founding Director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB), he will also consider the role funding bodies can and should play in nudging change in higher-educational institutions.
