Synopsis

In this presentation I will give an overview of the state of technology for, and knowledge on, the concurrent acquisition of electrophysiological signals and fMRI data in humans. Emphasis will be placed on the recording of ECG/EKG and EEG (recorded on the scalp and intracranially) during fMRI. Data quality and safety aspects will be discussed, and key applications illustrated.

In this presentation I will give an overview of the state of the technology for, and knowledge on, the concurrent acquisition of electrophysiological signals and fMRI data in humans. Emphasis will be placed on the recording of ECG/EKG and EEG (recorded on the scalp and intracranially) during fMRI. Data quality and safety aspects will be discussed, and key applications illustrated.
I will show that it is possible to acquire concurrently-recorded electrophysiological recordings and fMRI data of good quality in certain conditions. This is particularly useful for studies of spontaneous (or non-reproducible) physiological states or events, and of the relationship between brain signals of different modalities.
