Target Audience

Participants who are ready to learn how to identify and correct artifacts encountered in MRI in a light-hearted game show format.

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize artifacts within MR images;
  • Identify and understand the sources of commonly encountered artifacts;
  • Recommend further tests for problem solving and troubleshooting artifacts; and
  • Implement methods to avoid common MR artifacts.

Description

The purpose of this course is to introduce the audience to image artifacts that may occur when using MRI, to explain what causes these artifacts, and to offer some ways to mitigate these artifacts. The course information will be presented in a light hearted game show format where contestants will be asked to answer a series of questions about the artifacts being presented. Following these short game show segments, experts in the field will offer brief presentations discussing the appearance of the artifacts, the physics causing the artifacts and practical methods to avoid or minimize them.

Throughout the session, a panel of experts will help or hinder and offer humorous commentary. Additionally, everyone in the room is encouraged to participate in one (or more) ways: (i) playing the Artifact Game Show as a contestant, (ii) participating through the audience response system to help the contestant (iii) encouraging the contestant through applause and cheering. Come for the artifacts, stay for the fun and prizes!
