A Primer on AI: How Deep Learning is Changing Everything

Deep learning has recently seen enormous successes in a variety of applications including computer vision, speech recognition and natural language processing. This was possible primarily due to availability of large data sets, a rapid growth of cheaply available computational power as well as new developments in theory and practice of training deep neural networks. Medicine is often deemed as the next field to be revolutionized by deep learning. In my talk I will give an introduction to modern approaches to artificial intelligence (AI). Starting from the basics of machine learning, I will then discuss complex models such as convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks. I will explain how the recent developments in deep learning are expected to affect medicine and medical imaging in particular. I will give examples of medical applications where deep learning is already successful, including our own work on breast cancer screening. The talk will be concluded by my perspective on the main challenges that have to be overcome for modern AI to be widely adopted in medical applications.
