Synopsis

This lecture will deal with conventional Gd-based contrast agents. In particular the molecular basis of the paramagnetic enhancement as well as Gd-complexes stability will be addressed.

Cardiovascular

Highlights

  • Classification of MRI contrast agents
  • Overview of the parameters affecting the in vivo stability of Gd-based T1 agents
  • Mechanism of action of Gd-based T1 agents
  • Some examples of fibrin targeting in Molecular Imaging

TARGET AUDIENCE: This talk is of interest for early stage researchers in the bio-medical field.

OUTCOME/OBJECTIVES: During this lecture, attendees will learn about the basic principles of Gd-based MRI contrast agents. In particular they will learn the importance of the molecular structure of Gd-complexes in the determination of the contrast agents in vivo stability and efficiency.

PURPOSE: Main characteristics and peculiarities of clinically approved Gd-based contrast agents.

METHODS: The problem has been studied from a chemical point of view in order to understand the molecular basis of the paramagnetic contrast enhancement

RESULTS: The attendees will be made aware of the main principles that underlie the efficiency of Gd complexes.

DISCUSSION: This issues is important to select the best contrast agents according with the pathology under investigation.

CONCLUSION: The lecture will deal with the most used contrast agents in the clinic nowadays. Hence learning more about this topic has a great relevance in the clinical practice.
