Synopsis

The primary focus of most of the medical field continues to be on late stage disease and the management of advanced disease. There is a critical need to move the field forward by shifting attention to human health and the prevention/early detection of disease. In order to do this one must start to create a detailed movie of individuals while they are still healthy and then as they eventually transition to illness. In this work I will describe the Baseline Study. This study has been designed over the last 2 years as a longitudinal cohort study to follow 10,000 subjects over many years. During the study period the subjects will have genomic assessment, bodily fluid assessment, microbiome measurements, serial imaging, as well as many other parameters measured. The resulting data will allow many hypotheses to be tested around human health and the transition to disease. The focus of the study is primarily on cancer and cardiovascular disease but there is a potential for eventually expanding the study. This talk will present the study design and how this study fits into the bigger goals around precision health (as opposed to precision medicine).
